Gegenschein – Definition and Meaning

The term ‘Gegenschein’ refers to a faint, diffuse glow in the night sky, typically observed in the region opposite the sun. This phenomenon occurs due to sunlight scattering off interplanetary dust particles and is best seen in dark areas of the sky when the moon is not brightly illuminating the surroundings. The Gegenschein is often associated with the zodiacal light, which is another form of illumination caused by the same interplanetary dust.
