The word “crinoid” refers to a class of echinoderms known scientifically as Crinoidea. These marine animals are characterized by their star-shaped body with a central disc and long, feathery arms that extend outward, resembling a flower. Crinoids are often found attached to the sea floor by a stalk. They are primarily filter feeders, capturing plankton and small particles from the water. Crinoids are sometimes called “sea lilies” due to their plant-like appearance, although they are not plants.
