Cresol is a term used to refer to any of three isomeric phenolic compounds that are methyl derivatives of phenol. These include ortho-cresol, meta-cresol, and para-cresol. Cresols are colorless to yellowish liquids with a distinctive odor, and they are commonly used as antiseptics, disinfectants, and in the production of various chemical compounds. They can be found in coal tar and are also produced during the destructive distillation of certain organic materials.
