cotyledon-Definition and Meaning

A cotyledon is a significant part of a seed, specifically referring to the first leaf or leaves that appear during the germination of a seed. In angiosperms (flowering plants), the number of cotyledons is used to classify them into two groups: monocots, which have one cotyledon, and dicots, which have two. Cotyledons provide nutrients to the developing plant before it can produce true leaves and begin photosynthesis.
