costermonger-Definition and Meaning

A “costermonger” is a term used to refer to a person who sells fruit and vegetables, typically in the open air or at street markets. The word originated in the early 19th century, combining “costard” (an old term for a type of apple) and “monger,” which means seller or trader. Costermongers often have itinerant stalls or carts from which they sell their goods, and historically, they played a significant role in the local economy, particularly in urban areas.
