Cetorhinus-Definition and Meaning

“Cetorhinus” is a genus of large migratory filter-feeding sharks, commonly known as basking sharks. The term refers specifically to these sharks belonging to the family Cetorhinidae. Basking sharks are known for their characteristic large dorsal fins and their habit of swimming near the surface of the water, often seen with their mouths open to filter-feed on plankton. The most well-known species within this genus is the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus).
