Carbonization is the process of converting a substance into carbon or a carbon-rich residue through the removal of water and volatile compounds, typically by heating in the absence of air (pyrolysis). This process is commonly applied to organic materials, such as wood or biomass, to create charcoal or to transform fossil fuels into coke. Carbonization can also occur in geological processes that lead to the formation of coal from plant matter over millions of years.
