cresol-Definition and Meaning

Cresol refers to any of several isomeric phenolic compounds derived from toluene, with the chemical formula C7H8O. They are classified as cresylic acids, which are colorless to yellowish liquids that have a strong odor. Cresols are used in various applications, including as disinfectants, solvents, and in the production of resins and plastics. The three common isomers are ortho-cresol, meta-cresol, and para-cresol, each differing in the arrangement of the hydroxyl group (–OH) on the benzene ring.
