crenelation-Definition and Meaning

Crenelation refers to the architectural feature characterized by a series of alternating high and low sections, often seen on the top of castle walls or battlements. These notches or indentations, known as crenels and merlons, allow for both defensive and offensive purposes, providing cover for defenders while enabling them to shoot or observe from behind the raised sections. Crenelation can also imply a decorative aspect in certain architectural designs.
